Congratulations to Maggie Erpelding & Charlie Bunn for being named the BHS 2020 Athletes of the Year!

Five male and five female senior athletics are selected each year from nominations by coaches based on: athletic talent, number of major letters earned, attitude and conduct (citizenship), academic achievement, school contributions outside of athletics, and peer acceptance and leadership. The finalists were recognized and the winners were announced at the virtual Bettendorf High School All Sports Event on Monday, May 18.

The Bettendorf High School Athlete of the Year Finalists:

  • Female Finalists: Layken Bytnar, Peyton Bytnar, Maggie Erpelding, Arianna Ottavianelli, and Kaalyn Petersen
  • Male Finalists: Noah Abbott, Charlie Bunn, Harrison Bey-Buie, Joe Byrne, and Kyler Castro


Maggie Erpelding

Maggie as a four-sport athlete has earned a total of 13 varsity letters. Two in volleyball and basketball, four in track, and a total of five in Softball. As team captain in volleyball Maggie was also voted honorable mention for Mac All-Conference. In basketball Maggie was voted honorable mention in 2018 and in 2019 she was voted 2nd team all-conference. Maggie was featured in the Quad Cities athlete of the week. Maggie was also selected for the senior All-Star Iowa vs. Illinois 2020 game. In track, Maggie was voted 1st and 2nd team for a variety of events 4 x 100, Distance Medley, 4 x 200, sprint medley. She also qualified for drake 2017-2019 and a state qualifier for 2017, 2018 and 2019.

In softball, she was voted second All-Conference team. Maggie will be attending the University of Northern Iowa.


Charlie Bunn

Charlie, as a swimmer for Bettendorf Bulldogs has earned four Varsity letters. He is a 9-Time Iowa State Champion, Only 3rd male in Iowa State Swimming History to win eight Straight Gold Medals, nine Time All American, holds two State Records, holds over 20 pool, school and meet records, District Swimmer of the Year, 16-time First Team All-MAC, 1/10th of a second off his Olympic Trial Cut, currently ranked ninth in the United States for 18 & U for his 50 free LCM for 2020 and Top 50 for the 50 and 100 freestyles SCY, 18 & U. Six-semester academic award letter, 3-year Academic All-MAC. Charlie will be attending the University of Missouri this fall.
