BHS Student COVID-19 Testing Project - Seeking Volunteers

BHS Student COVID-19 Testing Project - Seeking Volunteers

Dec 13, 2020

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We are pleased to announce that on November 2nd, the BCSD Board of Education approved Bettendorf High School’s participation in a pilot project with the Scott County Health Department to research our ability to increase our face-to-face learning time. This Quad City Times article provides additional information.

We are seeking more student volunteers to participate in this important project to assess asymptomatic transmission of COVID-19 at our school. We are hoping to have at least 200 hybrid-model student volunteers that will allow us to test them for COVID-19 using a rapid test approved on an emergency basis by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This is NOT the test that goes way up into the nostril, but rather a test that swabs just inside the nostril. The results will be received within 15 minutes, and District nurses will conduct the swab.

The rapid tests are not as reliable as the two-day test. Students who test positive will have to complete the test that goes farther up in the nostril and then quarantine until the positive test is confirmed with the more reliable test, which will be 24-48 hours. Finding out if your student is carrying the virus without symptoms could prevent further transmission to you, one of your other family members, and/or other students and staff at school. With the exception of notifying the Scott County Health Department, COVID tests conducted at school are confidential, and parents/guardians will be notified if a positive result surfaces.

The test only takes a few minutes so students will not miss significant class time. Please give serious consideration to helping with this important community project. The data collected will not only help our District but also allow us to see how the virus might be spreading in our community.

Thank you for your consideration. If you are willing to support this effort by allowing your student to participate, please print and sign the attached consent form and send back via mail, or email the signed consent form. You may withdraw your consent at any time. You can also have your student pick up a consent form in the BHS main office. Feel free to call 563-359-3681 or email with any questions.
