Congratulations to BHS Class of 2002 alumni Stephanie Hemberger, PE & Joshua Hemberger, AIA, LEEP AP for being selected as the 2023 Bettendorf Community Schools Foundation Visiting Science Scholars!
As a Visiting Science Scholar duo, Stephanie and Joshua will present on the horizontal and vertical infrastructure that builds our communities. They will be presenting to Bettendorf High School STEM students on Friday, March 24th. They will also be attending the Bett STEM expo on Saturday, March 25th to interact with guests.
STEPHANIE HEMBERGER (BRODERSEN)
Stephanie Hemberger (Brodersen) is a Transportation Engineer and Project Manager in Des Moines, IA, where she currently leads the transportation design practice for HNTB, a national engineering, planning, and architecture firm.
Stephanie attended Paul Norton Elementary School and progressed through Bettendorf Middle and High School, graduating in 2002. She went on to study Civil Engineering at Iowa State University (ISU) and obtained her Bachelor of Science in 2006. In addition to her B.S. in Civil Engineering, Stephanie minored in French and with her interest in leading and managing engineering projects and teams, obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, MO in 2009.
Stephanie joined HNTB as a roadway design engineer at their headquarters in Kansas City upon graduating from ISU. Within civil engineering, she has a passion for connecting people to places through transportation and has had a varied career designing and leading projects for state Departments of Transportation (DOTs) and local municipalities. She is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in IA and MO. In 2020, Stephanie welcomed the opportunity to build upon her project experience in Iowa and “moved home” with her family to be part of opening the firm’s Des Moines office.
In addition to her focus at work, Stephanie is passionate about the community within which she is a part of. She is a graduate of the Greater Kansas City Chamber Centurions Leadership Program (Class of 2014) as well as the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute (Class of 2022). She is also active in the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS), an organization focused on attracting, sustaining, connecting, and advancing women’s careers to strengthen the transportation industry. She currently serves on the Iowa Chapter Executive Board of Directors as Secretary.
JOSHUA HEMBERGER
Co-presenting with Stephanie as a 2023 Visiting Science Scholar is her husband, Joshua Hemberger. Joshua attended Grant Wood Elementary School and similarly attended Bettendorf Middle and High School, graduating in 2002. He also attended Iowa State University, where he studied Architecture. Joshua graduated with his Bachelor of Architecture in 2008 and minored in digital media.
Upon moving to Kansas City, Joshua began his career working at the Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity, home to the Kansas City Ballet. Since then, he has been part of and has led a wide variety of work from housing to campus master plans. Joshua is now with Substance Architecture in Des Moines where he is currently leading the firm’s work on several projects with Indigenous non-profits and tribes of South Dakota.
Joshua strives to create architecture that inspires and improves both the human and environmental health of a community. He creates high-performance solutions with the aid of many tools to improve daylighting, thermal performance, and other aspects of buildings.
